We recently covered some of the most severe injuries UFC fighters have suffered in a fight, and in a sport with such a high injury risk, there’s are always more injuries than can be covered in one article. Read on if you’d like to learn about four more of the worst injuries we’ve seen happen in UFC fights.
The MacGregor injury is fresh in our memory due to it happening just this summer. Conor MacGregor and Dustin Poirier fought at UFC 254 in a fight with a ton of hype leading up to fight day. Conor MacGregor is always a top draw and Dustin Poirier is one of the best in the UFC, and both fighters exchanged numerous verbal jabs leading up to the fight.
Unfortunately, we did not get the fight we were looking for as Conor MacGregor gruesomely broke his leg in the first round of the fight. It appeared that over the course of the first round, MacGregor’s tibia had been weakened due to blocking Poirier’s leg strikes and throwing kicks of his own. MacGregor struck out at Poirier with his foot, and when he planted his leg after the strike it visibly broke causing the fight to end. Conor being Conor, continued to trash talk Poirier in a post-fight interview despite losing due to TKO.
The fight at UFC 248 between challenger Joanna Jedrzejczyk and champion Weili Zhang was an instant classic that saw Zhang retain the UFC Women’s Strawweight Title. The fight was intense and the brutality of the sport was obvious at the end when Jedrejczyk’s face was left swollen and bloodied.
While both fighters were assessed at the hospital after the fight, the hematoma of Joanna’s face was so severe, she was left with only five percent of her vision in one eye and displayed significant swelling and bruising on her entire face. Fortunately, over time she’s been able to recover, but the toll UFC fighters take was obvious at the end of this bout.
Many UFC fans remember Silva’s injury against Chris Weidman at UFC 168 considering the popularity of Anderson and the massive build up for this premier fight.
This fight was a much anticipated rematch as Weidman had ended Silva’s winning streak and taken his middleweight title from him in their previous fight. Both fighters were focused, but the Silva would not get revenge as this fight went horrible wrong. During the fight, Silva went on the offensive and during a leg strike, Weidman checked to block the strike. As soon as Silva’s leg connected with Weidman’s shin Anderson’s tibia and fibula snapped as a packed arena and millions of fight fans watching on TV heard him howl in pain. It would be more than two years before Silva would fight again.
In a big heavyweight fight, veteran Heath Herring stepped into the octagon with an imposing Brock Lesnar who was only fighting in his third UFC bout. While this fight went the full three rounds, Herring was in trouble from the very first punch.
As soon as the fight started, Brock Lesnar was able to land a heavy right to Herring’s left eye. The punch dropped Herring momentarily, and he’s even admitted to having vision problems for the rest of the fight. It’s been rumored that he broke his orbital socket at some point during the bout. It may not have been that punch that broke Herring’s orbital socket, however, as Lesnar continued to work over Heath Herring’s face, but Herring was forced into retirement after this bout. Heath has not appeared in the UFC since, but did fight in Japan eight years later.
